Weigh In 05/28/11

I've been very lazy about tracking, eating right and working out the last month or so. Didn't even check my weight each week because I knew I had gained. Stepped on the scale this morning and I've gained 2.8 lbs since I last logged an actual weigh in. Not as bad as I had feared but it's time to get back to business.

I can tell that I'm starting to get into a funk because I've not been "productive" and I need to get out of it.

Can you spare $5?

Please consider donating, even $5, to help these little girls get a room where they can play in the sun. Please click on the link to learn more about their conditions and this incredible family!

9 servings a day?

I was reading an article on MSN that said for optimal health and longevity you should eat 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. I'm not sure about you but I have trouble getting in 2-3 per day. I don't usually buy fresh items because they seem to go bad so fast and I don't want to be at the grocery store every other day.

I guess if I actually cooked more it would be easier but we've gotten lazy and we eat lots of convenience foods. Mostly because I'm dealing with a defiant teen right now and I'm mentally exhausted by the time dinner comes around. :)

I've got canned fruit & veggies in the cabinet so I need to focus more on getting a larger number of servings into my diet this week. I've also got to get back on track with the weight loss and working out because I've been yo-yo-ing the last few weeks and eating poorly.

Good luck this week to anyone else that is also on this never ending journey to health!

My hometown voted most obese in the nation?!?!

Last week we were made aware of an online poll that indicated Evansville, Indiana is the fattest metro area of the groups that they surveyed. Here is the link if you'd like to see what our paper printed.
Evansville, Indiana = Most Obese Metro Area

First, I don't like these random polls because you never know how diverse a group of participants really are. Second, I hate the BMI calculator...it is a sorry excuse for judging the health of people and should be outlawed. Based on this calculator, The Rock would be considered obese.

I ask you, does this look obese to you?
This looks HOT to me!

In 2008, I lost 88 lbs and was 5'5" and weighed around 185 lbs. Based on the current BMI calculator I was still considered obese. Here is my picture from that time frame.

I wasn't "skinny" but I wouldn't have considered myself obese. I was wearing a size 14/16 and it really saddens me that people over a size 4 are often considered plus sized.

I can't wait until we can lose this obsession we have with how other people look. I fear I may never see that day.

Welfare Recipients Fined For Being Overweight?

I came across this article and found it quite interesting. Arizona would like to charge a $50 "annual fee" for welfare claimants that are considered overweight and are not following a doctors dietary plan.

Honestly, I think it's a fantastic idea. This might be the only way for people that are living off the system to really focus on their health and make some better decisions. I don't think this should be a global rule but for anyone on government/state assistance it makes sense.

To me, this should be implemented along with mandatory drug testing for anyone getting benefits. Hopefully, that would ensure that the people that truly need the assistance can get it and those that are just milking the system because they are too lazy to work are identified and properly removed from the system.

Just my opinion...tell me yours.

Weigh In 05/14/11

Well, I let myself go again this week and ended up with a gain. I think it was around 3 lbs which is ridiculous! I'm stocked up on protein shakes, special K stuff and I'm ready to get back on track this week. I'm sick of this yo yo crap and I need to get back into this so I can lose the weight and find a job. There are so many things I could do if I didn't have to worry about the pain in my legs/feet.

Mother's Day Funk

You'd think I'd be used to the disappointment that comes with being a single parent on holidays but today it's just really bringing me down. I mean, it's Mother's Day for goodness sake. Could I at least get a nice attitude today? No, I fixed breakfast for 3 kids, only 1 was my own, and didn't even get a "Happy Mother's Day" from my 13 year old. I don't expect him to buy me gifts or make me breakfast but not even a comment?

Then, as soon as he could get dressed, he's out of the house, playing with his friends. When he calls to see about playing the XBOX (which he's grounded from due to his behavior), he gets mad and hangs up on me when I say NO.

I don't expect alot but I'd at least like to get some respect today. Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.

Mother's Day Plans

So, for nother's day I will be having a fun filled overnight with my son (13) and 2 nieces (2 & 4). I have to wonder why they aren't required to spend the night with their mother but then I remember how "hands off" she is with them and my confusion disappears. I only hope they aren't traumatized when they wake up and find themselves at my house instead of their mother's. They are probably used to it by now. So sad that she doesn't even try to get her children on mother's day..or any holiday for that matter. She is supposed to get them for a couple hours tomorrow night. Isn't that ridiculous?

Weigh In 05/07/11

I was happily surprised by the scale this morning, which reflected a loss of 2.2 lbs. Granted, that is a 2 week loss since the scale said I gained last week and I refused to log it (even if it was only 0.8 lbs). :)

Anyway, that is about 26 lbs lost since the beginning of the year. Not nearly the pace that I was able to lose weight in 2007 but I'm older now and my stress level is higher because I'm still unemployed and running out of time. :(

Things will get better, I've just got to make it through this rough patch, that I hope doesn't stick around very long.

Time to get up and clean the house up before the family comes over for dinner tomorrow! Happy Mother's Day!
